Heart Symbols Copy and Paste

Click any heart below and it lands on your clipboard, ready for a bio, a caption, a message, a document or a line of code. Nothing to install and no shortcut to learn.

Two different families live on this page. The text hearts (β™‘ β™₯ ❀ β₯ ❣) are ordinary characters that take the colour of the text around them, so they turn white on a dark background and black on a light one. The coloured heart emoji (❀️ 🧑 πŸ’› πŸ’š πŸ’™ πŸ’œ) always carry their own colour, because the font paints them.

Every character also lists its Unicode code point, HTML entity and Windows ALT code, so you can type it directly once you know which one you want.

How to type a heart symbol on Windows

Hold ALT and type the decimal code on the numeric keypad, then let go of ALT. ALT 3 gives β™₯ in most applications, and the full code ALT 9829 does the same thing more reliably. Every code is listed beside its character in the tables above.

In Microsoft Word there is a second route that does not need a keypad: type the code point (2665 for β™₯, 2661 for β™‘) and press ALT + X. Word replaces the code with the character.

How to type a heart on Mac, iPhone and Android

On a Mac press CTRL + CMD + SPACE to open the Character Viewer, type heart in the search box and double click the one you want. Drag your favourites into the Favourites tray and they stay one click away.

On iPhone and Android the emoji keyboard covers the coloured hearts: switch to the emoji layout and look under Smileys and People. The flat text hearts are not on the emoji keyboard, so copy them here and save them as a text replacement (Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Replacement on iOS) with a shortcut such as hrt.

Text hearts, emoji hearts and the variation selectors

❀ and ❀️ look like the same thing but they are not. The first is one character, U+2764. The second is that character followed by an invisible variation selector (U+FE0F) that tells the system to draw the colour emoji instead of the flat glyph. There is a matching selector (U+FE0E) that forces the flat glyph.

This is why a heart you pasted into a spreadsheet arrives black, while the same heart in a chat app is red. It also explains why a heart sometimes takes up two spaces in a character count: the selector is a real character even though you cannot see it.

If you want a heart you can recolour with CSS or with a font colour picker, use the text form β™₯ or ❀︎. If you want it to look identical everywhere, use the emoji form ❀️.

Hearts on Instagram, Discord, Twitter and TikTok

Instagram bios and captions accept pasted hearts of both kinds, and they survive editing. If a heart disappears when you save a bio, you probably pasted a very new emoji (the grey, pink and light blue hearts date from 2022) that the app has not caught up with.

Discord converts  and :blue_heart: into emoji as you type, and pasted text hearts stay flat, which is handy for channel names and role labels. Twitter and X count each emoji as two characters against the limit, so a caption stuffed with hearts runs out of room faster than it looks.

Screen readers announce emoji by name, so a line of twelve red hearts is read aloud as red heart twelve times. Use one or two for emphasis rather than a wall of them.

Why a heart shows as a box or the wrong colour

An empty rectangle means the font in use has no glyph for that code point. Switch to a font with wide coverage (Segoe UI Symbol and Segoe UI Emoji on Windows, Apple Color Emoji on Mac, Noto Color Emoji on Linux and Android) or update the operating system if the character is recent.

A heart that arrives as a question mark usually means the file is not being read as UTF-8. In spreadsheets and CSV exports, choose UTF-8 explicitly when you save.

A heart that looks black when you expected red is the text presentation described above. Add the emoji variation selector by copying ❀️ from the coloured group instead of ❀ from the text group.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy a heart symbol?

Click any heart on this page. It goes straight to your clipboard and a Copied message appears. Paste with CTRL + V, or CMD + V on a Mac.

What is the difference between β™₯ and ❀?

β™₯ (U+2665) is the card suit character and ❀ (U+2764) is a heavier dingbat heart. Both are plain text, but ❀ is the one that becomes the red heart emoji when a variation selector or an emoji font is applied.

How do I type β™₯ with an ALT code?

Hold ALT and type 3 on the numeric keypad, or ALT 9829 for the same character. In Word you can also type 2665 and press ALT + X.

What does <3 mean?

It is a heart drawn sideways with a less-than sign and a three, from the days before emoji. Tilt your head to the left and it lines up. </3 is the broken version.

Why is my red heart showing as a plain outline or a black shape?

You copied the text form rather than the emoji form, or the app is rendering text presentation. Copy ❀️ from the coloured heart emoji group, which includes the invisible variation selector that requests the colour picture.

Do coloured hearts mean different things?

Informally, yes. Red is romantic love, pink is affection and friendship, black is dark humour or grief, purple is often fandom, and green, blue and yellow get used for teams, causes and moods. None of it is official, so context decides.
