Ether Symbol (Ξ)
Ξ is the symbol for the Ether, currency code ETH. Click it below to copy it, then paste it into your invoice, spreadsheet, price list or message.
The Ether is used in No country; the Ethereum network. Its subunit is the wei and gwei.
The Greek capital letter Xi is used as the ether sign.

How to type the Ether symbol
On Windows, hold ALT and type 926 on the numeric keypad, then let go of ALT. In Microsoft Word you can also type 039E and press ALT + X, which turns the code into Ξ.
On a Mac, press CTRL + CMD + SPACE to open the Character Viewer, search for "ether", and double click the symbol. On iPhone and Android, press and hold the currency key on the keyboard to reveal a row of alternative symbols.
In HTML, write Ξ. In a UTF-8 document you can simply paste Ξ into the source and it will display correctly.

Formatting ETH amounts correctly
The symbol goes in front of the amount, with no space: Ξ1,250.00.
Thousands separators and decimal marks change by country as well. Getting the symbol right and the separators wrong still looks wrong, so check both when you are writing for an audience in No country; the Ethereum network.
In a spreadsheet, do not type the symbol into the cell. Format the cell as currency and pick ETH instead, so the value stays a number you can calculate with.
Using Ξ in Excel and Google Sheets
In Excel, select the cells, press CTRL + 1, choose Currency or Accounting, then pick the Ether from the symbol list. Accounting format lines the symbols up down the column, which is what you want on an invoice.
In Google Sheets, use Format, then Number, then Custom currency, and search for ETH. Sheets keeps the cell numeric, so SUM and other formulas keep working.
Why Ξ sometimes shows as a box
A box, a question mark or two odd letters means the font or the encoding is at fault, not the character. Make sure the document is saved as UTF-8 and use a font with wide coverage such as Arial, Segoe UI, Noto Sans or Helvetica.
Older systems that predate U+039E in their fonts will not have a glyph for it. In that case, fall back to the ETH code, which every system can display.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy the Ether symbol?
Click the large Ξ at the top of this page. It goes straight to your clipboard, then press CTRL + V (CMD + V on a Mac) to paste it.
What is the ALT code for Ξ?
ALT 926. Hold ALT, type the digits on the numeric keypad, then release ALT. The number row along the top of the keyboard will not work.
What is the currency code for the Ether?
ETH. That is its ISO 4217 code, and it is what banks, payment systems and APIs expect.
Does Ξ go before or after the number?
The symbol goes in front of the amount, with no space: Ξ1,250.00.
Can I use Ξ in a filename or a URL?
Avoid it. Currency symbols are legal in many filenames but they are percent-encoded in URLs and can break older systems. Use the ETH code instead.
